As the transfer window for Turkish clubs remains open until February 11, speculation continues to swirl around Kieran Trippier’s future at Newcastle United.
However, manager Eddie Howe has made one thing crystal clear—he has no intention of letting his veteran defender leave.
Galatasaray’s Interest and Newcastle’s Response
Turkish giants Galatasaray have expressed interest in the 34-year-old right-back, making inquiries in recent days.
While Newcastle reportedly dismissed their approach last weekend, the possibility of a renewed bid still lingers.
But Howe remains unwavering in his stance.
“No part of us wanted to lose Kieran in January,” Howe said.
“He’s unique—his set-piece delivery, his passing, his leadership—there’s no one else like him.
That kind of old-school leadership, where you’re constantly talking, organizing, and thinking about the whole team, is rare these days.”
Trippier’s Impact and Recent Performance
Despite dealing with fitness struggles earlier this season, Trippier delivered a stellar performance during Newcastle’s Carabao Cup semi-final win over Arsenal.
His presence on the pitch was a game-changer, showcasing his composure, experience, and ability to dictate play.
“Kieran was magnificent against Arsenal,” Howe added. “His experience was invaluable.
He brings a calming influence but is also a big voice in the team.
He’s had a tough season with a few fitness setbacks, but stepping up and performing in big games is a skill not many players have.”
Competition for the Right-Back Spot
Newcastle has depth in the right-back position, with Tino Livramento having an impressive season and Emil Krafth also providing reliable cover.
However, Howe insists that Trippier’s unique qualities make him irreplaceable.
“For the past six weeks, Kieran has looked really sharp physically,” he said.
“That’s going to be crucial for us in the second half of the season.”
Callum Wilson’s Future Still Up in the Air
Meanwhile, Howe also addressed the future of striker Callum Wilson, whose contract is set to expire at the end of the season.
The 32-year-old has struggled with injuries and is yet to start a match this season, but his return from a two-month absence against Arsenal has reignited discussions about his role at the club.
“I’d never write Callum Wilson off,” Howe stated.
“If he can stay fit, he’s an outstanding centre-forward.
He knows how we play, has the experience, the pace, the strength, and, most importantly, he’s a goalscorer.”
While Newcastle opted not to sign a new striker during the January transfer window, Howe believes Wilson remains a valuable asset if he can maintain his fitness.
“The key is keeping him fit,” Howe added.
“That’s what Callum wants, that’s what we want, and fingers crossed, we can make it happen.”
What’s Next for Newcastle?
With the Premier League season entering a critical phase, Newcastle will need all hands on deck.
Trippier’s leadership and Wilson’s goal-scoring instincts could prove vital in the months ahead.
While Galatasaray might make another move before their deadline, for now, it looks like Trippier is staying put—just as Howe wants.
