A 50-year-old Dundee woman, Karen Hayter, has been sentenced to jail after she struck a pedestrian and sped off with the victim clinging to her car’s bonnet.
Mark McIntyre, the victim, attempted to prevent Hayter from fleeing the scene of a minor collision, only to find himself desperately holding onto her car as she accelerated.
The frightening experience left him severely injured, and he later shared his story with the court, recounting his fear that he might not survive the encounter.
Pedestrian’s Effort to Stop a Hit-and-Run Turns into a Harrowing Ride
The incident began when Hayter’s Fiat Panda clipped another vehicle.
Mr. McIntyre, who witnessed the accident, stepped forward, hoping to stop her from driving off without reporting it.
Rather than stopping, however, Hayter drove straight at him, forcing him onto the car’s bonnet.
CCTV footage showed Hayter continuing to drive for more than 500 yards with McIntyre holding on, before finally throwing him onto the road.
She later abandoned the vehicle near an Asda and left the scene in a taxi.
Court Testimonies Reveal a Terrifying Encounter
In the trial at Dundee Sheriff Court, Mr. McIntyre described his panic as he clung to the car, shouting for Hayter to stop.
He told the court he felt he was “going to die” as she looked at him with what he described as an “evil” expression.
Mr. McIntyre suffered cuts, abrasions, and a slipped disc from the incident, which left a lasting impact on his health and wellbeing.
Hayter Claims Self-Defense, Jury Finds Her Guilty
Throughout the trial, Hayter claimed she feared for her safety, alleging that she believed Mr. McIntyre might attack her.
However, the court also heard that McIntyre had been trying to signal to Hayter to come to her senses and stop the car.
The jury ultimately found her guilty of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, failing to stop at an accident, and causing permanent disfigurement and impairment.
Sentencing and the Aftermath
Sheriff Paul Brown sentenced Hayter to 14 months in jail and banned her from driving for five years and seven months.
Mr. McIntyre, visibly emotional, expressed his relief and gratitude for the verdict as the sentencing concluded, bringing a painful chapter to a close.
