Television personality and HGTV star Drew Scott has revealed how an unexpected interaction with his young son prompted him to reassess the balance between his career and family life.

The 48-year-old said the experience served as a powerful reminder that children often mirror the behavior they see from their parents, leading him to make significant changes to his daily routine.

Scott opened up about the deeply personal moment in a video shared with his followers on Instagram, describing it as a “heartbreaking wake-up call.”

Son’s Playtime Reflected Dad’s Work Habits

According to Scott, the realization came shortly after he returned home one day and greeted his four-year-old son, Parker, hoping for a hug. Instead, the child ran off, grabbed one of his toys, held it to his ear, and began pretending to conduct a business call while pacing around the room.

The playful imitation immediately struck Scott, who recognized that his son had been copying what he frequently saw at home—his father constantly occupied with work-related phone calls.

The father of two admitted the moment was painful because it highlighted how his professional commitments had unintentionally become one of the strongest impressions he was leaving on his children.

Choosing Presence Over Constant Productivity

Following the encounter, Scott said he made a conscious decision to put his phone aside whenever he is spending time with his family.

He explained that being fully engaged means listening carefully to his children’s questions, responding to them, and participating in their games rather than remaining distracted by work.

Scott noted that even small changes have produced noticeable differences at home.

He said he now sees the excitement on the face of his two-year-old daughter, Piper, whenever he gives her his complete attention, describing those moments as deeply rewarding.

He also acknowledged that, in the past, he would often squeeze business calls into lunch breaks or other family moments simply to keep up with his demanding schedule.

Looking Beyond Career Success

Reflecting on the long-term impact of those choices, Scott said he fears many parents can become so consumed by work that they miss irreplaceable milestones in their children’s lives.

He encouraged others to consider what will matter most years from now, warning that a successful career alone may feel hollow if it comes at the expense of meaningful family memories.

He also urged people to resist the temptation of checking their phones while spending time with loved ones, emphasizing that genuine presence is one of the greatest gifts parents can offer.

Family Life With Linda Phan

Scott shares Parker, 4, and Piper, 2, with his wife, Linda Phan.

The couple first met in 2010 before becoming engaged in 2016.

Their wedding was featured in the TLC special Property Brothers: Linda and Drew Say I Do, giving fans a glimpse into their celebration.

The couple welcomed their first child, Parker, in May 2022, followed by daughter Piper in May 2024.

Both children were conceived through IVF after the pair publicly discussed their fertility journey.

Recent Months Have Also Brought Personal Loss

Scott’s reflections on family arrive during an emotional period for the household.

Earlier this year, he paid tribute to Phan’s late mother after her passing, describing her as an extraordinarily kind, generous, and selfless person whose influence touched everyone around her.

In a heartfelt social media message, Scott expressed his sorrow over the loss and spoke about the lasting memories she created with the family.

He also shared his sadness that she would not have the opportunity to watch Parker and Piper grow up, while expressing gratitude for the love and guidance she gave to her children and grandchildren throughout her life.
