Daniel Dubois’ trainer, Charles, shuts down rumors of being fired while recovering from illness ahead of title fight with Anthony Joshua in London

In the world of boxing, tension can run high even outside the ring.

As heavyweight Daniel Dubois prepares to face Anthony Joshua this weekend, unexpected rumors began swirling about his team.

Speculation Surrounds Trainer’s Absence

Dubois’ trainer, Charles, became the subject of speculation after he was noticeably absent from key pre-fight events, such as the grand arrivals and open workouts.

Social media quickly jumped to conclusions, with many suggesting that Charles had been fired due to a falling out with Dubois.

This rumor spread like wildfire, igniting controversy just days before the much-anticipated fight.

The Truth Behind the Absence

However, the reality is far less dramatic.

On Thursday, reports surfaced that Charles had been battling an illness, a fact Dubois confirmed during his final press conference.

Charles later addressed the situation, expressing his frustration with the unfounded rumors.

He explained to talkSPORT that he had been bedridden with a severe head cold, and his absence was simply a precaution to prevent spreading the illness to Dubois.

Determined to Be in the Corner

Despite the setback, Charles remains determined to be by Dubois’ side at Wembley.

“I’ve been down for five days, but I’m getting stronger,” Charles shared.

He reassured fans that, with a bit of luck and recovery, he fully intends to be in Dubois’ corner on fight night.

Charles also took the opportunity to shut down any talk of a rift between him and Dubois, calling the rumors “vicious lies.”

Although he’s still recovering, Charles plans to skip the weigh-in, but is confident he’ll be ready to resume his duties as trainer on Saturday.

A Strong Partnership Heading Into the Title Fight

Charles has been instrumental in Dubois’ recent career resurgence.

After suffering a loss to Oleksandr Usyk in 2023, Dubois has bounced back with key wins over Jarrell Miller and Filip Hrgovic.

The latter victory earned Dubois the interim IBF title, and he was later elevated to full champion after Usyk vacated the belt.

Now, as Dubois prepares for his first title defense against Joshua, all eyes will be on whether Charles can be there to guide him from the corner.

If his recovery continues, it looks like Dubois will have his trusted trainer right where he needs him.
