Chiefs explain why they haven’t recruited more in transfer window

Chiefs announced on Monday that they had “extended the contracts of seven of the club’s most talented players” during the January transfer window.

Nkosingiphile Ngcobo, Sabelo Radebe, Happy Mashiane, Reeve Frosler, Keletso Sifama, Bruce Bvuma, and Thabo Mokoena have signed new contracts with Amakhosi that will keep them with the team indefinitely.

Although some fans were hoping for more newcomers to join Chiefs, their statement provided this detail: “The club did enquire about the availability of some players with a few clubs in the league during the January transfer window period, but there was general reluctance from some of those clubs to do business even though the players expressed their interest in joining Amakhosi.”

Kaizer Chiefs will continue to do business on a willing buyer, willing seller policy with other clubs in the future.

“We signed nine players at the start of the season, many of whom were called for by supporters, and they have added a lot of value to the team. This means we have a good balance in terms of contracts when you look at the nine and the seven we’ve just extended. We believe the squad will compete fiercely in the coming months so that we finish as high as possible on the log,” stated Football Manager, Bobby Motaung.

“The plan is to ensure that the coaching team should be able to plan adequately without worrying much about players’ movements. We will sit again at the end of the season to assess what we require so that we are ready in the new season because this is an on-going process.”

Motaung added that the contracts of senior players would be reviewed and renewed in the near future.

“We are happy that we were able to secure these seven players’ services for an extended period,” he commented. “We have to ensure that our future is secured and these are the players that will form an integral part in building a formidable team in years to come. This is in line with our strategy and primary focus of reducing the average age of the squad and building a young dynamic team for the future.

“There are senior players’ contracts that need to be reviewed and we are in the process of evaluating and finalising those deals. We will make further announcements in due course.”
