A relaxing tour of the Cape Vidal Nature Reserve took a tragic turn when a British tourist, aged 47, encountered difficulties while swimming at a remote beach.
Ezemvelo Wildlife rangers were the first to spot the man struggling in the water and quickly raised the alarm, prompting the NSRI (National Sea Rescue Institute) St. Lucia duty crew to respond.
Swift Response from Rescuers
Without delay, an NSRI rescue vehicle arrived at the scene, carrying highly trained rescue swimmers and towing a rescue craft.
Upon arrival, the team joined forces with the Ezemvelo Wildlife rangers to assist in the search.
The man was eventually pulled from the surf zone by the NSRI rescue swimmers, but despite their efforts, he was tragically found to have already passed away.
Involvement of Authorities
The man’s body was respectfully handed over to local authorities, with Police and Government Health Forensic Pathology Services taking charge of the situation.
A private ambulance service in KZN also provided assistance on-site.
The police have since opened an inquest docket to investigate the circumstances surrounding the drowning.
