Lyle Foster finds himself at an important crossroads in his international career after falling out of favour with Bafana Bafana and moving to the United States in search of a fresh start.
The former Orlando Pirates striker has already experienced a major change in circumstances this year. After Burnley were relegated from the English Premier League, Foster left the club on loan and joined Major League Soccer side Houston Dynamo.
Now 26, the Soweto-born forward must rebuild his momentum if he is to convince Bafana Bafana coach Pitso Mosimane that he still deserves a place in the national team.
From Europe to MLS in Search of a Reset
Foster’s career has taken him through several leagues since he began his professional journey with Monaco.
The striker subsequently had spells in Belgium and Portugal before establishing himself in England with Burnley, where he spent three years.
His departure from the Premier League followed Burnley’s relegation, leaving Foster with the challenge of adapting to a new league while attempting to regain the form that previously made him an important part of South Africa‘s plans.
The move to Houston could ultimately provide him with an opportunity to rediscover his confidence and consistency.
Foster Was Once Central to Bafana’s Attack
Foster’s current absence from the Bafana setup is notable given the role he played during South Africa’s run at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
The striker contributed two goals and two assists as Bafana Bafana reached the semi-finals, establishing himself as one of the team’s important attacking options.
He also started South Africa’s World Cup campaign against Mexico, playing 56 minutes.
However, his involvement dropped sharply after that match. Foster remained an unused substitute against Czechia, South Korea and Canada, highlighting the uncertainty surrounding his position in Mosimane’s plans.
November Squad Could Provide a Major Clue
The next Bafana Bafana squad announcement could offer an indication of whether Foster remains part of Mosimane’s long-term thinking.
His experience at international level and previous performances mean he cannot be completely dismissed, but competition for attacking positions has increased.
Foster will therefore need to make an impression with Houston Dynamo if he hopes to force his way back into the national team.
A strong spell in MLS could give him the platform needed to regain his confidence and remind Mosimane of what he can offer.
Appollis Increasing Pressure on Foster
While Foster’s international future remains uncertain, Oswin Appollis is strengthening his own case for a prominent role in Bafana Bafana.
The Orlando Pirates attacker has emerged as one of South Africa’s most exciting attacking players and is attracting attention beyond the domestic game.
French Ligue 1 club Strasbourg are reportedly monitoring his performances, while Portuguese giants Porto have also previously been linked with an interest in the 25-year-old.
Appollis Continues to Produce for Club and Country
Appollis recently delivered an outstanding performance for Bafana Bafana during the 5-0 victory over Eritrea, providing three assists.
It was not the first time he had achieved that feat for the national team, having also recorded three assists against Congo in 2024.
His club form has also remained impressive. Appollis has registered two goals and two assists in seven Betway Premiership appearances this season.
That combination of domestic consistency and international impact has strengthened his position within South Africa’s attacking setup.
Pirates Await Major MTN8 Final
Appollis will have another opportunity to underline his importance when Orlando Pirates face Mamelodi Sundowns in the MTN8 final.
The two sides are scheduled to meet at 18:00 on Saturday, 10 October, with the first major piece of domestic silverware of the season at stake.
For Pirates, Appollis’ form could be crucial as they attempt to overcome Sundowns.
For Bafana Bafana, his continued rise presents Mosimane with another attacking option — and potentially makes Foster’s route back into the starting picture even more difficult.
Foster Has Time to Change the Story
Foster’s current exclusion from Bafana Bafana does not necessarily mean the end of his international career.
At 26, he still has time to rebuild his club form, regain confidence and compete for selection. His previous contribution to Bafana’s AFCON campaign also demonstrates that he has already shown he can perform at international level.
The challenge now is to turn his move to Houston into a fresh beginning.
With Appollis flourishing and competition for places increasing, Foster will need to make the most of every opportunity if he wants to hear his name called when Mosimane announces his next Bafana Bafana squad.
