After more than a decade spent playing overseas, Thulani Serero is back in South Africa.
The 34-year-old midfielder, who has made a name for himself in Europe and the UAE, is now ready to play for Cape Town City.
Instead of rejoining one of the country’s biggest clubs like Kaizer Chiefs, Serero will wear the number 8 jersey for the Citizens, marking a new chapter in his career.
A Glorious Career in Europe
Serero’s football journey has largely been shaped in Europe, particularly in the Netherlands.
He spent six years at Ajax Amsterdam from 2011 to 2017, where he made 121 appearances.
One of his standout moments came when he played alongside Martin Ødegaard at Vitesse Arnhem between 2018 and 2019.
The duo formed a seamless midfield partnership, with Serero playing as the deeper-lying player while Ødegaard operated ahead of him in the number 8 role—a combination that closely mirrors how Ødegaard currently plays with Arsenal.
Impressive Experience at the Highest Level
Throughout his career, Serero gained a wealth of experience, including 11 appearances in the prestigious UEFA Champions League.
His most recent participation in the tournament was during the 2014-2015 season with Ajax. Back in his early days with Ajax Cape Town, Serero was a creative force in the midfield, often seen as a classic number 10.
His exceptional performances earned him the PSL Player of the Season award for the 2010-2011 campaign.
By 2015, while at Ajax Amsterdam, his value had peaked at R4 million (approximately R77 million).
Kaizer Chiefs Eyeing Feisal Salum
While Serero makes his return to South Africa with Cape Town City, Kaizer Chiefs are reportedly pursuing Tanzanian midfielder Feisal Salum.
According to SoccerLaduma, Salum is expected to leave Azam FC at the end of the current season.
The 27-year-old attacking midfielder is known for his goal-scoring ability and has a strong connection with Chiefs’ head coach Nasreddine Nabi and assistant Cedric Kaze, having worked together at Yanga SC.
Salum has earned 41 caps for his national team, adding to his growing reputation.
