Cambridge motorists protest ‘draconian’ £5 congestion charge

It is renowned as the nation’s cycling capital. However, motorists in Cambridge are protesting a ‘draconian’ congestion fee that, according to them, goes too far in favor of the bicycle lobby.

Greater Cambridge Partnership (GCP) plans to implement a $5 fee for weekday trips to, from, and within a zone that encompasses nearly the whole city.

According to proponents, it will help fund public transportation and improve air quality. Opponents, however, argue that the anticipated $1,300 yearly cost per vehicle is unreasonable given the current cost of living issue.

Some claimed they would have to leave Cambridge entirely because they could not pay the fee, while others claimed they were too ill to cycle to hospital appointments.

However, activist Josh Grantham stated, “The majority of Cambridge residents favor enhanced bus service and cycling.” This offers funding for these two activities.

The Sustainable Travel Zone is anticipated to become operational in 2027/28.

A decision is due next month on an expanded program in Oxford that will impose a £10 fee on drivers of gasoline and diesel vehicles.
