The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has some thrilling news for women’s football fans!
Morocco has been officially selected to host the 2024 Women’s Champions League tournament, showcasing the country’s commitment to promoting women’s sports.
A Welcoming Return to Morocco
This will mark the second time in just four years that Morocco will take the lead as the host, having successfully organized the tournament back in 2022.
The event is set to take place from November 9 to 23, 2024, and will feature eight competitive teams vying for the championship title.
New Representation from COSAFA
For the first time since the tournament’s inception in 2021, the COSAFA region will have two clubs represented.
The defending champions, Mamelodi Sundowns, will be making the trip to North Africa, joined by their local rivals, the University of Western Cape (UWC).
Sundowns as Favorites
With a strong track record, the Sundowns are seen as the frontrunners to claim the trophy once again, having previously won it in both 2021 and 2023.
However, they shouldn’t underestimate the hosts, AS FAR, who also lifted the Women’s Champions League trophy on home soil in 2022.
Lucrative Prize Money
CAF has announced that the stakes are high this year.
The winners of the tournament will take home an impressive USD 400,000 (about R7 million), while the runners-up will not go home empty-handed, receiving USD 250,000, which is just over R4.4 million.
