Burke Ramsey’s Silence in New Netflix Docuseries on JonBenet’s Murder Keeps His Family at the Center of Speculation Over the 1996 Crime in Boulder, Colorado

The tragic murder of JonBenet Ramsey, a six-year-old beauty queen, continues to captivate public attention decades later.

Netflix’s Cold Case: Who Killed JonBenet Ramsey revisits the unsolved mystery of her death, but notably, Burke Ramsey, her older brother, does not appear in the series.

His absence stands out, especially since the documentary includes interviews with JonBenet’s father, John Ramsey.

Burke’s Decision to Stay Silent

Burke, who was just nine years old when his sister was found murdered in their family’s Boulder, Colorado home, chose not to participate in the documentary.

A card at the end of the final episode explains that he declined the filmmakers’ request for an interview due to the way he has been treated by the media and online sleuths.

Director Joe Berlinger confirmed that while they respected Burke’s decision, they did not push him to speak.

The Ongoing Mystery of JonBenet’s Murder

JonBenet’s murder remains one of the most high-profile unsolved cases in the U.S. On December 26, 1996, after her family found a ransom note demanding $118,000, JonBenet was reported missing.

Her body was later discovered in the basement of their home, and her death was ruled a homicide.

Despite years of investigation, no one has ever been charged, leaving the case open.

Initially, JonBenet’s parents, Patsy and John Ramsey, and Burke were all considered suspects.

Some speculated that Burke, at the time a young boy, could have accidentally killed his sister in a fit of rage, with the parents then covering up the crime.

However, a grand jury later cleared Burke of any involvement, and he was excluded as a suspect in 1999.

New DNA Evidence and Shifting Theories

In 2008, DNA testing on JonBenet’s clothing pointed to the involvement of an unknown third party, clearing the Ramsey family from suspicion.

Former district attorney Mary Lacy, who oversaw the investigation, called the Ramseys “victims of this crime.”

Burke was grateful for this development, emphasizing the importance of the new evidence in helping to find the real killer.

“The most important thing is that we now have very, very solid evidence that will eventually lead us to the killer,” Burke said at the time.

Burke’s Public Appearances and Legal Battles

Over the years, Burke has opened up about the case, most notably in a 2016 interview on Dr. Phil, where he strongly denied any involvement in his sister’s death.

Burke also shared his belief that a pedophile targeting beauty pageants may have been responsible for JonBenet’s murder.

That same year, he filed a lawsuit against CBS after the network aired a controversial documentary that suggested he might have killed JonBenet with a blunt object.

The lawsuit sought $250 million in compensatory damages and $500 million in punitive damages.

In 2019, the case was settled, but the terms remain undisclosed.

The mystery surrounding JonBenet’s death endures, and Burke’s choice to stay silent in the latest documentary adds to the complexity and ongoing pain for his family.

As new theories continue to surface, the question of who killed JonBenet Ramsey remains unanswered.
