James Blunt has declared that he will legally change his name to “Blunty McBluntface” if his latest album hits number one on the charts.
As he prepares to re-release his iconic 2004 album Back to Bedlam, he’s sticking to a humorous promise he made earlier: he’ll adopt whatever name the public chooses if his music ascends to the top.
The Announcement in Style
Blunt, who is now 50, unveiled this cheeky commitment in a sketch video shared on his social media over the weekend.
This album originally dropped two decades ago and features major hits like “You’re Beautiful,” “High,” “Wisemen,” and “Goodbye My Lover.”
Back then, Back to Bedlam dominated the UK albums chart for weeks and is now proudly certified 10x Platinum.
To mark its 20th anniversary, the Hampshire native is not only re-releasing the album but also embarking on a tour.
A Comedic Twist at Warner Music
The sketch video shows Blunt humorously attempting to gain entry into a Warner Music Group building, only to be thwarted at the front desk for using “James Blunt.”
He tries out a series of outlandish alternatives—like “Jimmy Spliff,” “Blames Junt,” “Divock Origi,” and even “Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny Pop Star Four Chord Song Machiney”—but to no avail.
Finally, when he suggests “Blunty McBluntface,” he’s allowed in, prompting him to quip, “People have no imagination.”
The receptionist’s witty reply? “The people have spoken.”
A Unique Offer to Fans
In an earlier Instagram post, Blunt jokingly remarked, “My name is James Blunt and you have the power to absolutely f**k my life.”
He confirmed the rumors about re-releasing Back to Bedlam on October 11, explaining that it’s been a source of consistent wealth for him over the last two decades.
As a fun way to give back to his fans, he said, “If Back to Bedlam re-enters the charts at number one, I will legally change my name. What will I change it to? Well, it’s entirely up to you.”
Engaging with Fans
James continued, “I’ve been called many things in my life—’the most hated man in pop,’ ‘annoying,’ ‘James Beige.’ I’ll let the people decide.”
He assured fans that if his album doesn’t clinch the top spot, he won’t be changing his name.
“This is the most important democratic moment of the year,” he added.
During an appearance on Radio X’s Chris Moyles Show, Blunt reiterated his commitment, stating, “I have signed up to changing my name to whatever the public wants.”
He even humorously promised, “I swear on my life and the life of my one fan—Brian from Glasgow—I will change my name if it hits number one.”
A Nostalgic Look Back
Reflecting on his past successes, Blunt shared that “High” was the first single to break into the charts, which was followed by the hits “Wisemen” and “You’re Beautiful.”
He noted, “We put out ‘High,’ and that got a bit of radio visibility—this is my natural home!
Then came ‘Wisemen,’ which pushed the album into the top 20, and finally, ‘You’re Beautiful’ hit big in 2005, and the rest is a terrible, terrible history!”
The much-anticipated 20th-anniversary reissue of Back to Bedlam will drop on October 11, featuring a selection of unreleased tracks, including “Standing All Alone,” “Close Your Eyes,” “Butterfly,” and a B-side track called “Sugar-Coated.”
It looks like Blunt’s got quite the adventure ahead, and fans are eagerly waiting to see if they’ll get to call him by a new name!
