Britain Prepares for Heavy Snowfall and Freezing Temperatures This Weekend as Met Office Issues Warnings Across the Country

As the first days of 2025 unfold, Britain is gearing up for an intense weather event with heavy snow and plummeting temperatures expected to hit this weekend.

The Met Office has issued a 44-hour warning for much of the UK, with snow potentially accumulating up to a foot in some areas.

The warning will be in effect from Saturday noon through to 9am Monday, covering much of England, almost all of Wales, and parts of southern Scotland, including Greater London.

What to Expect Over the Weekend

The cold snap is set to bring freezing temperatures, with lows expected to reach -10°C (14°F) in Scotland and -5°C (23°F) in London.

The snowstorm will start with rain spreading northeast on Saturday, turning to snow as it moves northward into Sunday.

Forecasters are predicting significant snow accumulation, especially on hills, and up to 30cm (1ft) of snow in higher ground areas like Wales and the Pennines.

Alongside the snow, the weather will bring strong winds that could cause snowdrifts.

Some areas may also see a transition to freezing rain, adding to the icy conditions.

Travel disruptions are likely, with some roads becoming blocked, rail services delayed, and air travel facing cancellations.

Impact on Travel and Safety

This severe weather is already causing widespread disruption.

A number of flights have been canceled, with Heathrow Airport experiencing delays, including 28 British Airways flights.

The stormy weather is also affecting rail services, particularly in northern England, where heavy rain has caused flooding and travel chaos.

TransPennine Express has advised passengers not to travel in certain areas, including routes affected by the flooding in Greater Manchester and Cheshire.

Emergency services are on high alert as the flooding worsens, with the Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service responding to an increased number of emergency calls.

National Highways has also reported several major road closures, including sections of the M56 and M57 due to floods.

A Challenging Start to the New Year

This winter storm marks a chaotic start to 2025.

London’s New Year’s Day Parade has been delayed, and parts of Scotland saw Hogmanay celebrations canceled due to safety concerns.

With the ongoing weather conditions, it’s important for people across the UK to stay updated on warnings and take necessary precautions, especially regarding travel.

In total, more than 130 flood warnings have been issued, with some parts of the country receiving nearly a month’s worth of rain in just 48 hours.

As the storm continues to make its way across the UK, both snow and ice warnings remain in effect.

People are urged to stay safe and prepare for ongoing disruptions in the coming days.

What’s Next for the Weather in Britain

The UK Health Security Agency has issued a cold weather alert, urging people to take precautions.

Over the next few days, temperatures will remain well below average, and the risk of further snow and ice-related disruptions is high.

The public is advised to stay indoors when possible and avoid unnecessary travel as the weather system moves across the country.
