Britain Braces for Heavy Rain and Unsettled Weather Before Sunshine Returns for the Weekend

Looks like Britain is bracing for a bit of a rollercoaster with the weather over the next few days.

The country is expected to experience some heavy rain before the sunny spells make a comeback just in time for the weekend.

Today, parts of the UK will see showers, with Scotland facing the heaviest rain. However, things should clear up by the evening, bringing drier and clearer conditions. Temperatures are set to hit around 23°C (73°F) in southern England, 20°C (68°F) in the North, and 18°C (64°F) in Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland.

Met Office meteorologist Amy Bokota mentioned that the South East will start off with brighter and fresher conditions, while the far North West will face a damp beginning.

This is due to a low-pressure system and an occluded front bringing frequent showers in the morning.

In the afternoon, a high-pressure ridge will extend across the South, leading to drier weather. Most areas should stay dry this evening, although the North West will see scattered showers, and the South West might get some rain by dawn.

Thursday’s Forecast

Ms. Bokota also highlighted that Thursday will start with thicker clouds as a new frontal system brings rain and drizzle.

Rain will move in from the West and could become heavier in the afternoon, with temperatures reaching 23°C (73°F) in the South and 21°C (70°F) in the North.

The weather will turn more humid and muggy under the clouds and rain, but the South East and parts of North East England and Scotland will enjoy some early morning sunshine.

Rain and drizzle will gradually move north-east, with some heavier downpours possible, particularly in northern Wales and North West England, which might cause isolated surface water flooding.

Weekend Outlook

Ms. Bokota noted that despite a grey and wet night on Thursday, conditions will improve in the South by Friday, with drier and brighter weather on the way. Highs of 26°C (79°F) are expected, although the North may still see some showers.

The weekend is set to bring even warmer temperatures, with 27°C (81°F) in the South East on Saturday and 29°C (84°F) on Sunday. However, the North might continue to experience more rain.

This comes after a recent heatwave that saw the UK’s hottest day of 2024 so far, with temperatures reaching 32.0°C (89.6°F) at Kew Gardens and Heathrow Airport on July 30. Yesterday’s top temperature in Britain was 26.4°C (79.5°F) at Neatishead in Norfolk.
