Bitcoin moved back above $84,000 as Wall Street opened on Thursday, October 1, with the cryptocurrency finding support as US Treasury yields pulled back from fresh multidecade highs.
BTC/USD was up around 0.6% on the day, with hourly price action continuing to form a sequence of higher lows. Traders were closely watching whether Bitcoin could maintain the momentum and establish stronger support during the first US trading session of October.
Treasury Yields Retreat After Reaching Historic Levels
The move higher in Bitcoin came as pressure in the US bond market eased.
The 10-year Treasury yield had climbed to 5.342%, its highest level since April 2002, before retreating to around 5.251%. The 30-year yield also reached a fresh macro high before moving lower.
The decline in yields provided some relief to risk assets after the recent surge in borrowing costs had increased concerns about inflation, government debt and the Federal Reserve’s policy outlook.
Rising Government Debt Raises Market Concerns
Mahmood Pradhan, a former deputy director of the European department at the International Monetary Fund, told The New York Times that global markets were becoming increasingly concerned about government debt levels.
Higher bond yields mean governments face greater interest expenses when refinancing or servicing their debt, adding another source of pressure to financial markets.
Pradhan also pointed to the war in the Middle East as an important factor behind the changing economic environment, particularly because elevated oil prices could feed into inflation.
Inflation Data Fails to Calm Bond Market
Recent US inflation figures have provided some evidence of easing price pressures, although the data has done little to settle concerns in the bond market.
The August Personal Consumption Expenditures index, closely monitored by the Federal Reserve, increased 3.4% year over year, coming in below economists’ expectations.
Despite the softer-than-anticipated reading, financial markets showed a limited response. Some analysts questioned how much of the improvement reflected changes in the way the PCE data was calculated.
Crypto analyst Benjamin Cowen argued on X that bond-market concerns had intensified because investors had become increasingly worried that the Federal Reserve was not doing enough to contain inflation.
Bitcoin Faces Resistance Around Key Liquidity Zones
While Bitcoin pushed above $84,000, trading data suggested that the cryptocurrency remained caught between significant pools of liquidity.
CoinGlass data identified roughly $84,500 and $82,900 as important areas around the current spot price. Such concentrations of leveraged positions can potentially draw price action toward them as traders adjust their positions.
Approximately $25 million in Bitcoin positions were liquidated over the preceding 24 hours, highlighting the relatively tight trading range between buyers and sellers.
Analyst Warns of Another Test at $82,500
Despite Bitcoin’s recovery above $84,000, trader and analyst Rekt Capital expects the market could revisit lower support before attempting another sustained move higher.
He identified approximately $82,500 as an important level that Bitcoin may need to retest. According to his analysis, a successful test of that area could provide the foundation for another continuation higher.
However, Rekt Capital cautioned that the retest could be volatile, describing the potential move as a “messy” process rather than a straightforward pullback.
$82,500 Remains Crucial for the Broader Recovery
The $82,500 area has already emerged as an important reference point in Bitcoin’s recent price structure.
Rekt Capital previously argued that Bitcoin’s ability to defend that level would be important in determining whether its broader recovery could continue.
That makes any move back toward $82,500 particularly significant for traders monitoring whether the latest rebound is developing into a stronger trend or remains part of a wider period of consolidation.
Bond Market Moves Remain Important for Bitcoin
Bitcoin’s latest move illustrates how closely cryptocurrency markets remain connected to broader financial conditions.
The retreat in Treasury yields offered some immediate relief after the bond market’s sharp rise, but persistent concerns over inflation, government borrowing and geopolitical risks remain important factors for investors.
For Bitcoin, the immediate focus is likely to remain on whether it can consolidate above $84,000 while defending nearby support levels, particularly the $82,500 zone highlighted by Rekt Capital.
