Bill Maher has recently voiced his disapproval regarding the Boy Scouts of America’s decision to change their name to Scouting America, a move aimed at promoting inclusivity.
The name change was officially implemented this month, sparking heated discussions, including one on Maher’s show Real Time with Bill Maher.
A Comedian’s Reaction to the Change
On his show, Bill Maher, known for his outspoken views, expressed frustration over what he sees as the overreach of the change.
“The whole f****** country is an Onion headline,” Maher said, adding that it’s absurd for the Boy Scouts to no longer be called “Boy Scouts” because the term is now seen as exclusionary.
He made a pointed remark, asking why there isn’t a Girl Scouts group and suggesting that this shift is an unnecessary disruption.
Political Figures Weigh In on the Change
Maher wasn’t alone in voicing concern.
Ohio Democratic Congressman Tim Ryan weighed in, explaining that the unique approach needed for boys is essential for their growth into fully functioning adults.
Ryan argued that the move to make the Boy Scouts more inclusive undermines this developmental process.
Maher humorously interrupted Ryan, joking about the behavior of boys on camping trips, poking fun at how the group’s stereotypical antics, such as farting in sleeping bags, reflect the differences between boys and girls.
Support for the Boy Scouts’ Inclusivity
While Maher and Ryan expressed reservations, some figures understand the motivation behind the change.
Columnist Pamela Paul suggested that girls might find the Boy Scouts more appealing due to the activities offered.
She added humorously that the only thing the Girl Scouts had going for them was their iconic cookies.
Kid Rock Joins the Debate
Kid Rock, a prominent figure known for his Republican stance and support of President Trump, also voiced his opinion on the issue.
He argued that the decision to modify the Boy Scouts alienates a significant portion of boys, leading to what he called a generational decline in masculinity.
His blunt language captured his frustration with the modern trend of inclusivity.
What the Boy Scouts Organization Says
The Boy Scouts’ parent organization, now called Scouting America, has clarified that the name change reflects their efforts to welcome everyone into the program.
Roger A. Krone, the president and CEO of Scouting America, emphasized that the mission remains the same: to teach young people to be “Prepared for Life.”
He assured that this change was a necessary step to ensure that no one feels excluded from the valuable experiences Scouting offers.
A Shift Toward Inclusivity
This name change is just the latest in a series of reforms within the Boy Scouts.
Over the years, they have made efforts to modernize, including allowing gay youth and adult leaders to join the ranks.
In 2017, the organization made waves by admitting girls into the Cub Scouts and later into the flagship Boy Scout program, which has since been renamed Scouts BSA.
A Decline in Membership
Despite these changes, the organization has seen a significant decline in membership over the years. At its peak in 1972, membership reached nearly 5 million.
Today, Scouting America has just over 1 million youths, with around 176,000 being girls and young women.
This decline followed the inclusion of girls, which led to legal disputes with the Girl Scouts of the USA, who argued that it harmed their recruitment efforts.
The two groups eventually reached a settlement, allowing both to use the term “Scouts.”
The Boy Scouts’ Financial Struggles
The Boy Scouts’ recent history also includes financial struggles.
In 2023, they emerged from a bankruptcy reorganization plan aimed at compensating over 80,000 men who have claimed they were sexually abused while in the program.
Despite these challenges, the organization continues to push forward with its reform efforts.
The Political Context of Inclusion Efforts
The push for inclusivity in Scouting America comes at a time when President Trump’s administration has taken steps to dismantle certain diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) policies.
Under his second term, Trump has made moves to limit the focus on gender ideology within federal agencies, including removing certain content from government websites.
This political climate has influenced many public debates around inclusivity and gender, including the ongoing discussions about the Boy Scouts’ name change.
As Scouting America continues to evolve, these debates about tradition, inclusivity, and identity are sure to remain at the forefront of public discourse.
