In the wake of recent social media buzz, the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) in Tshwane are gearing up to visit Babel restaurant in Menlyn.
The establishment is facing accusations of mistreating employees and failing to comply with South Africa’s labour laws.
Allegations of Employee Mistreatment
A viral video has raised alarms about the conditions at Babel.
It suggests that staff members are working without formal contracts, are forced to purchase their own uniforms and equipment, and are lacking proper work schedules and a basic salary.
EFF’s Response to the Situation
EFF chairperson in Tshwane, Obakeng Ramabodu, has spoken out against these practices.
He argues that it’s unjust for employees to bear additional costs while they’re already struggling to make a living.
Ramabodu highlighted the issue of management allegedly taking a portion of employees’ tips, which should be part of their salary.
Labour Rights and Upcoming Investigation
Ramabodu criticized these actions as severe violations of labour rights, calling them an infringement on the social security protections meant to safeguard vulnerable workers.
The EFF’s planned visit aims to address these serious concerns and ensure that the employees receive the fair treatment they deserve.
Red Berets’ Previous Actions: A Look Back
This isn’t the first time the EFF has made headlines with their activism.
In September 2020, a controversial advertisement by TRESemme hair products sparked outrage.
EFF members protested outside Clicks stores across the country, leading to incidents of vandalism and petrol bombings.
The situation was resolved after EFF leadership and Clicks management negotiated an agreement, which included removing TRESemme SA products from stores.
What will be the next step for the EFF? Stay tuned for updates.
