In a surprising turn of events, Robin DiAngelo, author of White Fragility, has addressed an embarrassing incident involving right-wing podcaster Matt Walsh.
Walsh’s new film, Am I Racist?, has sparked controversy after tricking DiAngelo into a cringe-worthy scene.
The Prank Revealed
DiAngelo was duped into paying reparations to Walsh’s black producer as part of a scene in Walsh’s film.
The film satirizes the white left’s focus on anti-racism, and the scene involved DiAngelo handing over cash under the guise of supporting reparations.
In a detailed blog post, DiAngelo criticized Walsh’s film, labeling it a “Borat-style mockumentary.”
She recounted her unease when she saw Walsh in an “ill-fitting wig” and described the project as a deliberate attempt to embarrass and undermine anti-racist activists.
She regretted participating, despite receiving $15,000 for her time, which she later donated to the NAACP Legal Defense Fund.
DiAngelo’s Experience
DiAngelo explained how she was approached in 2023 by a group claiming to produce a documentary titled Shades of Justice.
The supposed documentary aimed to explore efforts to combat racism in the U.S.
They offered her between $10,000 and $20,000 for an interview, and she agreed to participate for $15,000.
However, DiAngelo revealed that things took a strange turn during filming.
Walsh unexpectedly pressured her to give cash on the spot if she supported reparations.
Despite feeling uncomfortable with the request, she complied and handed $30 to the producer, Ben, after confirming he was okay with it.
Reaction and Further Developments
DiAngelo felt unsettled by the scene and requested that it not be included, fearing it would mislead viewers about reparations.
Her bestselling book, White Fragility, made her a prominent figure in discussions about race.
Matt Walsh responded to DiAngelo’s statement on X, thanking her for her comments.
He humorously acknowledged her critique, affirming that the film’s intent was indeed to challenge anti-racist educators and activists.
Walsh’s film, Am I Racist?, features a nine-minute segment with DiAngelo, showcasing increasingly absurd scenarios designed to critique the diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) industry.
The film, produced by The Daily Wire, is set to hit theaters on Friday, September 13.
It critiques the DEI movement that gained momentum after the 2020 police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis.
