Auditor-General’s office to undertake real-time audits of flood relief funds

The Auditor-General Tsakani Maluleke has announced that her office will undertake real-time audits of the funds set aside to provide relief to flood-ravaged communities in KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape.

Maluleke says a multi-disciplinary team of experts will conduct an audit to ensure that any potential fraud, wastage, and theft are identified and immediately reported to accounting officers.

She says the real time audits happen as soon as transactions have been completed, unlike having to wait until the end of the financial year.

“If we are swift about giving these audit findings and recommendations and even indications of risk, what’s required is for there to be responsiveness in the system,” adds Maluleke.

Meanwhile, earlier this month, former IFP leader and Member of Parliament Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi called on leaders and government officials to use their conscience to avoid the plundering of the disaster relief funds meant for flood victims.

Buthelezi was speaking virtually, in response to a debate on President Cyril Ramaphosa’s address to a Joint-Sitting of Parliament on the devastating floods that ravaged KwaZulu-Natal and parts of the Eastern Cape.
