Atletico Madrid targets Liverpool star Andy Robertson as key summer signing for defensive rebuild in Spain

It looks like the summer transfer market is heating up — and Andy Robertson’s name is right in the thick of it.

While Liverpool fans are used to seeing their Scottish left-back cemented in the starting XI, reports now suggest Atletico Madrid could be plotting a surprise move for the fan favourite.

With Diego Simeone planning a squad shake-up after a lackluster third-place finish in La Liga, Atletico are searching for fresh energy on the left.

And according to The Athletic, Robertson is right at the top of their wish list.

Liverpool Moves Trigger Questions Over Robertson’s Future

Back at Anfield, things are getting interesting.

Robertson, now 31, is entering the final year of his contract.

Meanwhile, Liverpool are pushing hard to sign Bournemouth’s rising star Milos Kerkez — a £45 million-rated left-back who had a standout season.

That’s naturally sparked speculation. Is Robertson’s time on Merseyside winding down? The Scot doesn’t seem too fazed.

Robertson Embraces the Fight for His Place

In a recent interview with Sky Sports, Robertson showed exactly why he’s loved by fans — no drama, just grit.

“When you play for a big club like Liverpool, you expect challenges,” he said.

“I’ve faced competition throughout my time here, and that’s part of football.”

He also acknowledged the need for progress: “The club is always evolving.

We’ve already brought in Jeremie Frimpong, and it looks like more signings are on the way.”

But he was quick to add that competition only fuels ambition: “I want the club to be ambitious.

If you’re happy with your role, you stay and fight. If not, you move on.”

Atletico Needs a Left-Back and Has History with British Players

Atletico’s interest in Robertson makes sense. Both César Azpilicueta and Reinildo are nearing the end of their contracts, leaving Simeone short in that department.

Javi Galán is still there, but Atletico clearly wants reinforcements.

And the club does have a track record of bringing in British talent.

Just ask Kieran Trippier, who thrived in Madrid, or Conor Gallagher, who made a strong impression.

Robertson Still Valuable Despite Changing Role

Though Robertson only registered one Premier League assist last season — a far cry from his earlier rampaging form — it doesn’t tell the full story.

His role has shifted, now often holding back to cover when his full-back partner surges forward.

That tactical change, along with injuries and system adjustments, may explain the dip in numbers rather than any loss in ability.

No New Contract Yet, But That Doesn’t Mean Goodbye

While some might see the absence of a new deal as a red flag, Liverpool have a habit of playing the long game.

Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk had their renewals delayed too

. Ibrahima Konaté is also in the same boat right now.

So the lack of a contract extension doesn’t necessarily mean Liverpool are moving on — at least, not yet.

Kerkez Pursuit Could Change the Dynamics

Still, Robertson will be aware that the chase for Kerkez is very real.

Liverpool are reportedly in direct talks with Bournemouth and are trying to knock the £45 million price tag down.

If the deal goes through, it could set the stage for a serious positional battle — or even signal the start of a transition at left-back.
