Former NFL star Antonio Brown has found himself in the middle of a heated controversy after making an offensive comment about Notre Dame football player Charles Du.
Brown, who is no stranger to social media controversy, criticized Du using a racial slur, which quickly gained attention online.
Charles Du’s Viral Moment
Charles Du, a cornerback for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, became the center of attention during the Sugar Bowl on January 2, 2025, as his team secured a dramatic 23-10 victory over Georgia.
The win was particularly emotional for the team, as it followed the tragic New Orleans terror attack.
Du, a walk-on player originally from Beijing who attended high school in California, sported a jersey with his name written in Chinese characters, which caught the eye of many viewers.
The moment went viral, with ESPN sharing a clip of Du ahead of the game.
At the time, the clip had been viewed over two million times on X (formerly Twitter).
Antonio Brown’s Controversial Response
Antonio Brown, who has a long history of stirring up controversy on social media, reposted the clip of Du and added a distasteful comment, referring to Du as the “Ch**k of the Day.”
Brown’s post, which included a remark about Du securing an NIL deal, was viewed nearly 1.5 million times.
Brown’s comment was widely condemned, with fans calling for action.
Many criticized his use of the racial slur, with one person urging Elon Musk, the owner of X, to ban Brown from the platform.
Others drew parallels to the use of the N-word, accusing Brown of making a similarly offensive statement.
Brown’s Political Affiliation and History
In addition to his controversial remarks, Brown has been vocal in his support for former President Donald Trump.
He attended a Trump rally and even led a voter registration drive before the 2020 election, appearing on stage alongside Trump and former Steelers teammate Le’Veon Bell.
Brown’s last appearance in an NFL game came in January 2022, during a bizarre incident in which he walked off the field mid-game against the New York Jets, ripping off his jersey and pads.
This marked the end of his tumultuous NFL career.
Notre Dame’s Historic Win
Meanwhile, Du and the Notre Dame football team made history with their victory over the second-seeded Georgia Bulldogs in the College Football Playoff quarterfinals.
The team dominated on both offense and defense, with Jayden Harrison setting a record for the longest kickoff return for a touchdown.
Despite the postponement of the game due to the terror attack, Notre Dame’s 13-1 record and impressive performance sent them to the semifinals, where they’ll face off against Penn State at the Orange Bowl on January 9 in Miami.
