Animal protector is new Seattle “batwoman”

The Seattle Animal Shelter recently received a call from a good Samaritan who was at Matthews Beach in northeast Seattle with her family when they saw a bat struggling on the lawn by the beach. She safely confined the bat using a nearby trash can lid and Animal Control Officer Christopher St. Clair responded soon after.

With the help of the wildlife experts at PAWS, a healthy adult brown bat was released on-site in the wooded area of Matthews Beach Park.

“This species of bat has a lot of trouble taking off to fly from flat ground,” said St. Clair. “He just needed a leg up!”

Thanks to the park visitor’s timely action the bat had no contact with any of the kids enjoying the park or the beach. And a healthy bat was able to return to his home and continue to help control the aquatic insect population.
