Alica Schmidt, the German track star who made waves in Paris this summer, is setting her sights on a new athletic challenge.
After being a reserve for the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, the 26-year-old finally competed in the Paris Games this year, running in the mixed 4x400m relay at Stade de France.
Schmidt’s journey to Paris wasn’t without controversy, though.
She was selected over her teammate Luna Bulmahn for the women’s 4x400m event, a decision that sparked some debate.
Unfortunately, Germany didn’t make it past the heat stages in both events.
Schmidt described the experience as an emotional rollercoaster.
Reflecting on a Whirlwind Year
In an Instagram post, Schmidt took a moment to reflect on the past year, filled with highs and lows.
From the World Relays in the Bahamas, where the mixed relay team qualified for the Olympics, to the European Championships in Rome, where the women’s 4x400m team secured their spot in Paris, Schmidt’s year has been a whirlwind of unforgettable moments.
“It’s been quite a year,” she shared with her followers
. “I made memories that will last forever, and now, I’m ready for what’s next.”
Training for the 800m
Schmidt revealed that she will be focusing on the 800m, a challenge she’s excited to take on.
After her Olympic experience, she ventured out of her comfort zone, running the 800m and 600m, and found that she really enjoyed the challenge.
“Back in 2022, I decided I wanted to give the 800m a shot after Paris,” Schmidt explained.
“Now, I’m ready to go for it next year.”
She’ll be heading to her first high-altitude training camp, where she’ll join an international group of 800m runners, learning from seasoned athletes.
While Schmidt will continue to run the 400m, her main focus for now will be on building endurance for the 800m.
A New Tattoo to Mark the Journey
To commemorate her time at the Paris Games, Schmidt recently shared a glimpse of her first-ever tattoo, a tribute to her Olympic experience.
On her Instagram story, she posted a video of herself getting a tattoo of the Olympic logo on her thigh.
“I’m sooo happy!! It turned out exactly how I wanted it,” she captioned the post.
This addition to her body art collection marks a personal milestone as she continues to share her journey with fans on social media.
Looking Ahead to Los Angeles 2028
While Schmidt’s Olympic experience in Paris didn’t go as planned, she’s already setting her sights on the future, particularly the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles.
After her mixed relay team failed to make it past the heats, Schmidt faced disappointment in the women’s 4x400m event as well, where her team was narrowly defeated by Jamaica, the Netherlands, Ireland, and Canada.
Despite the setbacks, Schmidt remains positive, urging fellow athletes to keep pushing forward.
“It’s a bumpy road,” she said, “but one day all your hard work will eventually pay off.”
As Schmidt trains for the upcoming challenges, it’s clear that she’s determined to make her mark at the next Olympics.
Fans are eagerly awaiting to see what’s next for this talented and inspiring athlete.
