Reckless Act at Times Square Hotel
Two young individuals, aged 11 and 12, committed a dangerous act by throwing glass bottles of alcohol from a towering height of the InterContinental New York Times Square hotel.
The consequences were severe, causing injury to a 24-year-old woman down below.
The 12-year-old, involved in the act, faced charges of reckless endangerment, but due to her age, the 11-year-old was not charged.
The Incident and Immediate Aftermath
The unsettling incident took place a little before 5 pm on a Friday, triggering a momentary but widespread panic.
The sound of the bottle crashing down to the street resembled gunfire, prompting a swift closure of West 44th Street, between Eighth and Ninth Avenue, for approximately an hour.
The chaos and confusion among witnesses and passersby were palpable.
Injuries and Perceived Threats
The bottle, likely obtained from a hotel mini bar, struck a woman, resulting in a head injury.
Emergency response swiftly transported her to Bellevue Hospital, where she was reported to be in stable condition.
The noise of impact, akin to an explosion, led to assumptions of potential danger, with some speculating about the possibility of someone attempting self-harm by jumping from the hotel.
Impact on Surrounding Area and Residents
The repercussions extended beyond the immediate scene.
The street shutdown disrupted normalcy, leaving both bystanders and workers in nearby establishments startled and concerned.
Employees found themselves in lockdown, trapped in their workplaces for over three hours, grappling with uncertainty and worry triggered by the incident.
Broader Security Concerns in Times Square
This unsettling event unfolded against the backdrop of heightened security measures in Times Square, just ahead of the anticipated New Year’s Eve celebrations.
Mayor Eric Adams and NYPD officials emphasized their increased vigilance, citing past incidents and potential protests in the area.
The looming threat of protests against specific geopolitical events in the region compounded concerns, warranting an escalated security presence and extensive precautionary measures for the upcoming festivities.
Precautionary Measures and Closing Note
In anticipation of the New Year’s Eve revelries, Times Square was slated for closure with stringent security screenings and police checkpoints to ensure safety.
Mayor Adams reiterated the absence of specific threats while underlining the need for preparedness, emphasizing the unpredictable nature of such events in bustling city spaces, especially during significant public gatherings.
