As President Donald Trump begins his second term, there is a sense of anticipation among various Catholic intellectuals in the United States.
Many are reflecting on the changes they expect to unfold in the country, noting that Trump enters this term with greater confidence and clarity compared to his first term.
A More Prepared President
According to Susan Hanssen, an author and associate professor of history at the University of Dallas, Trump is now “better prepared” for his second term.
Hanssen suggests that the president is now unencumbered by the pressure of seeking re-election, which could allow for more decisive action in his administration’s policies.
“Trump’s base will be watching hopefully for deep structural changes that cannot be easily reversed or rolled back, particularly to the Department of Justice and FBI,” Hanssen told CNA.
She emphasizes the need for these institutions to operate in a way that ensures they are not misused for targeting political opponents.
Reforming the Department of Education
Hanssen also predicts that one of the major focuses of Trump’s second term will be on the Department of Education.
She envisions a shift in the balance of control, with more power returned to the states and, importantly, to parents.
“Parental rights over the education of their children is a fundamental issue of social justice,” Hanssen stated.
She highlights that, under Trump’s leadership, there could be a stronger push for parents to have the authority to choose religious education for their children, aligning with broader conservative values of family and education rights.
These discussions reflect the broader expectations that Trump’s second term will bring significant shifts in federal policies, with a particular focus on reinforcing conservative ideals related to justice and education.
