Anthony Joshua: Living with His Mother and the Challenges for Future Partners

The Choice to Live with His Mother

British boxing champion, Anthony Joshua, has shed light on his living situation, revealing that he still resides with his mother at the age of 34.

He firmly asserts that any potential partner will have to work hard to convince him to move out. This decision follows his move back into his mother’s two-bedroom former council flat in 2017, despite amassing an estimated £15 million from his victory over Wladimir Klitschko.

As he anticipates his next fight in 2024 after defeating Robert Helenius in August, Joshua sat down with Louis Theroux to discuss his close-knit family ties.

Family First for Joshua

Joshua emphasizes the importance of family in his life and culture, explaining his living arrangement with his mother.

He states, “In our culture, we grew up in our own family home, we support our parents. Why am I going to move out and leave my mum by herself, for some girl? Family is the most important thing.” Joshua’s perspective is rooted in the belief that when someone enters into a relationship with him, they are embracing his entire family.

He firmly asserts, “When a girl gets with me, she ain’t just marrying me, she’s marrying my family.”

Maintaining Privacy

The two-time world champion, who is not currently publicly linked to a relationship, admits that he prefers to keep his personal life out of the public eye. This inclination arises from his realization that he cannot live up to the high expectations people have of him.

He points out the constant scrutiny he faces, saying, “Are we going to dissect everything I say and use it as a narrative to create a story? That’s why I keep myself to myself.” Joshua believes that the pressure to be a perfect and flawless celebrity can be overwhelming.

He reflects, “You put all this pressure on yourself to come and be this big star and be perfect. I’m telling you, they’ll pull you down. The higher you are, the bigger the drop.”

Past Relationships and Flirtatious Exchanges

Joshua’s past relationships have included an on-off association with Nicole Osbourne, the mother of his child. He once purchased a £500,000 flat not far from his home for her.

In April, following his comeback win over Jermaine Franklin, Joshua engaged in a flirty interview with presenter Laura Woods.

During the interview, he referred to her as his “dream date.” Their playful exchange continued, with Joshua playfully mentioning that former Chelsea star Ruben Loftus-Cheek had named Woods as his crush. When asked about his relationship status, Joshua explained his commitment to boxing as a reason for not pursuing a relationship.

He said, “With boxing I didn’t want to commit because I didn’t want to go training and then I’m busy arguing with my Mrs or something and my head’s not in the game.” He added that he preferred to maintain his focus on his boxing career while observing both good and bad relationships around him.
