Residents of Umlazi in Durban can once again use the refurbished Umlazi BB Swimming Pool following its official reopening on 16 October 2026.
The reopening ceremony was led by eThekwini Municipality Community Services chairperson, Councillor Zama Sokhabase, alongside Ward 84 councillor Msizi Mabaso.
The event also included the handover of newly completed multi-sport combi courts within the swimming pool precinct.
New Courts Cater for Four Sporting Codes
The newly constructed courts are designed to accommodate several sports, including basketball, tennis, netball and indoor soccer.
According to the eThekwini Municipality, the facilities are intended to expand access to recreational spaces where residents can exercise and take part in organised sporting activities.
The municipality announced the reopening and handover in a social media post on 16 October, highlighting the upgraded swimming pool and the addition of courts for multiple sporting codes.
Facilities Aim to Encourage Healthy Lifestyles
The municipality said the upgraded facilities are intended to encourage healthier lifestyles by giving community members more opportunities to participate in physical activity.
The new courts are also expected to support sporting development, particularly among young people who want to improve their skills and participate in different sporting disciplines.
With the refurbished swimming pool and additional courts now available, residents have more recreational options within the Umlazi community.
Upgrade Forms Part of Wider Recreational Improvements
The swimming pool refurbishment and construction of the combi courts form part of eThekwini Municipality’s efforts to improve recreational facilities across Durban.
The project aims to provide accessible spaces for exercise, leisure and organised sport, while creating additional opportunities for young athletes to develop their abilities.
