The U.S. men’s Olympic football team faced a challenging beginning to their campaign, suffering a 3-0 loss to the host nation, France, in their match held in Marseille.
Despite a strong start, the game took a turn in the second half.
The first half ended in a stalemate, with neither side managing to find the back of the net.
However, France broke the deadlock in the 61st minute with a stunning long-range goal from Alexandre Lacazette.
Eight minutes later, Michael Olise added to the score with a beautifully curled shot, pushing the lead to 2-0.
The final blow came in the 85th minute when Loic Bade scored with a header, sealing the 3-0 victory for France and furthering the Americans’ frustration.
Missed Opportunities for the U.S.
The U.S. had its moments, including a notable header by John Tolkin shortly after Lacazette’s goal.
Griffin Yow also briefly put the U.S. on the scoreboard with a right-footed shot late in the game, but it was ruled out for offsides.
What Lies Ahead
To advance to the knockout rounds, the U.S. will need to secure positive results in their remaining group matches.
They will face New Zealand on Saturday and conclude Group A play against Guinea on Tuesday.
Unlike the French team, who boast stars like Lacazette, the U.S. squad is missing such high-profile players, but this absence might just offer a glimmer of hope for a turnaround.
A Disappointing Trend
This is the first Olympic appearance for the U.S. men’s team since 2008.
A group-stage exit would be a significant letdown, especially following the recent disappointment of their group-stage elimination from Copa America as hosts.
