Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) spokesperson Captain Simphiwe Mhlongo said the alleged kidnapping happened in the Inanda area on Wednesday.

“It is alleged that a 13-year-old victim was forcefully taken by three unknown suspects whilst he was on his way to school,” said Mhlongo.

The suspects allegedly removed the driver from the vehicle that was transporting the boy to school and stuffed him in the boot. He was later released in Emachobeni, Inanda.

A kidnapping case was reported at Inanda police station and the Hawks were notified. A joint operation was initiated and a search commenced.

The suspects allegedly demanded R1 million ransom from the victim’s mother – R90 000 was paid but the child was not returned.

Eventually, two suspects were arrested in Lindelani, near Ntuzuma. After the arrest, the 13-year-old victim was rescued from one of the informal settlements in Ntzuma, said the Hawks spokesperson.

“The cash amount of R90 000.00 was recovered and the vehicle that was used in the commission of crime was also seized,” said Mhlongo.

The arrested suspects – aged 28 and 29 – are expected to appear before the Ntuzuma Magistrate’s Court on kidnapping charges on Monday, 23 May.
