Tragedy Strikes Glebelands Hostel: Seven Killed in Umlazi Shooting Incident

…By Roland Peterson for TDPel Media. A shooting incident at the Glebelands Hostel in Umlazi, KwaZulu-Natal, has resulted in the opening of a docket containing seven counts of murder and two attempted murders by the local police.


Early Morning Tragedy

The incident took place in the early hours of Saturday morning, 3 June, leaving seven lives lost and several others injured.

Details of the Incident

According to Brigadier Jay Naicker, spokesperson for the South African Police Service (SAPS) in KwaZulu-Natal, nine men between the ages of 20 and 40 were consuming alcohol in a room at Block 57 of the Glebelands Hostel when unidentified gunmen suddenly opened fire.

After the shooting, the gunmen quickly fled the scene.

Fatalities and Injuries

Tragically, seven of the victims lost their lives at the scene, while two others sustained serious injuries and were rushed to the hospital for medical treatment.

Motive Unknown, Investigation Underway

Brigadier Naicker stated that the motive behind the shooting remains unknown at this stage.

In response, the Provincial Task Team has assigned detectives to investigate the incident and gather more information.
