Tonye Cole Advocates Unity Amidst Political Bitterness in Rivers State

Tonye Cole, the 2023 governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State, has expressed concern over the prevailing bitterness in the state’s political landscape.

During an appearance on Arise News, Cole emphasized the need for unity among South-South stakeholders, urging them not to escalate politics to extreme levels.

Politics as a Service, Not a Do-or-Die Affair

Cole conveyed his belief that politics should be viewed as a means of serving the people and contributing to the state’s development.

He discouraged the perception of politics as a do-or-die affair, emphasizing the importance of inclusivity and recognizing capable individuals on both sides of the political spectrum.

Disappointment Over Supreme Court Ruling

Reflecting on the Supreme Court ruling that affirmed the election of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Cole expressed disappointment.

Despite the setback, Cole highlighted that winning an election should not mark the end of a politician’s journey.

He acknowledged the positive feedback received for the type of politics he has run, suggesting a commitment to making a difference.

Legal Battle Over Governor Fubara’s Election

The legal battle stemmed from an appeal filed by Tonye Cole and the APC, contesting the election of Governor Fubara.

The appeal claimed that Fubara did not resign as the state’s Accountant General within the stipulated deadline before contesting the 2023 elections.

The Supreme Court, however, dismissed the appeal, stating that the allegations of noncompliance with the Electoral Act were not proven, leading to the rejection of the appeal as incompetent.
