Thulani Hlatshwayo Faces Uncertainty Over Future at SuperSport United as His Contract Approaches Expiry

As the current season comes to a close, veteran defender Thulani Hlatshwayo, also known as Tyson, could be heading out of SuperSport United.

The 35-year-old’s contract is set to expire at the end of the season, and it remains unclear whether the club will offer him an extension.

A Glimpse of His Season Performance

This season, Hlatshwayo has played a total of 720 minutes across eight matches in the Betway Premiership.

He also made a single appearance in the MTN 8, though SuperSport United’s run ended early with a first-round exit against Orlando Pirates.

As his contract draws to an end, Hlatshwayo’s performances in these final months could play a pivotal role in determining his future at the club.

Hlatshwayo Hopes to Impress for a Contract Renewal

While there have been no discussions between Hlatshwayo and the club yet, the experienced defender remains hopeful.

A source close to the situation told Phakaaathi that there might be a future role for Hlatshwayo at SuperSport United after his playing career ends, but his playing days at the club are uncertain.

“Things change quickly in football, and with a potential new coach on the horizon, there’s no telling what direction the club might take,” the source explained.

“At his age, and considering his fitness, there’s a lot for the club to think about.

Injuries will also factor into their decision as the season progresses.”

SuperSport Faces Defensive Shortage Without Hlatshwayo

If Hlatshwayo does depart the club at the end of the season, SuperSport United will be left with limited defensive options.

Currently, the club only has three dedicated defenders: Hlatshwayo, Pogiso Sanoka, and Bilal Baloi.

Losing Hlatshwayo would leave them thin in the center-back position, prompting the need to find reinforcements in the off-season.

The Future of SuperSport United’s Defence

SuperSport United faces an important decision regarding Hlatshwayo’s future.

Should the club extend his contract, or is it time to look towards younger players to bolster the defence? With the team’s current lack of depth in defensive options, this decision will likely shape the club’s plans for the next season.
