Tefu Mashamaite recalls journey from law student to Kaizer Chiefs captain in South Africa and reflects on achievements

Tefu Mashamaite, a name synonymous with Kaizer Chiefs’ glory days, has always emphasized the importance of education alongside his football career.

This former captain stands out as the last player to lift a trophy for the iconic Amakhosi, marking a significant chapter in the club’s history.

In 2015, Mashamaite led the Chiefs to league victory before making a surprising decision to move to BK Hacken in Sweden.

However, his international stint was brief, lasting only a year before he returned to South Africa to join SuperSport United.

His time in Pretoria was similarly short-lived, leading him to sign with Baberwa, continuing his journey in the South African football scene.

A Journey Through Education

In a candid conversation on The Bettor Podcast with Lorenz Köhle, Mashamaite reflected on his academic journey.

Initially, he pursued a law degree but soon shifted gears to focus on his true passion—football.

“When I left Limpopo, I came through to Wits and registered for a Bachelor in Arts,” he shared.

“I started with Law, but after two years, I switched to BA with a major in International Relations and Political Science.

I graduated in 2005, and that’s when I handed my mother her degree before fully committing to my football career.”

Reflecting on His Football Achievements

Now 41, Mashamaite boasts an impressive footballing resume that extends beyond just his time with Kaizer Chiefs.

He also captained Bidvest Wits during their memorable Nedbank Cup victory in 2010. Under the guidance of Stuart Baxter, he enjoyed a peak period in his career, accumulating four trophies with the Khosination.

“Captaining Wits to win the Nedbank Cup in 2010 was monumental,” Mashamaite recalled.

“We were the first team to play at the newly revamped FNB Stadium, defeating AmaZulu 3-0 in front of a packed crowd just before the World Cup.

Winning two league titles with Kaizer Chiefs, one as captain, and then going to BK Häcken to secure their first title in history was incredible.”

What Lies Ahead?

As Mashamaite reflects on his past and achievements, fans are left wondering what the future holds for this multifaceted individual.

With a rich history in football and a solid educational background, his next steps promise to be just as inspiring.
