Tears and Tributes at Funeral of Dowen College Torture Victim

After a long and arduous journey seeking justice, 12-year-old Dowen College pupil Sylvester Oromoni Jnr, who died under allegedly torturous circumstances at the hands of senior students, was finally laid to rest on Saturday, January 27, 2024.

The burial took place at the family’s compound in Ogbe-Ijoh, Warri South West Local Government Area of Delta State.

Emotional Scenes at the Burial

The burial ceremony, attended by numerous dignitaries from various locations, was filled with sorrow and tears as family members, friends, and well-wishers mourned the untimely passing of Sylvester.

The atmosphere was heavy with emotion as the community gathered to bid farewell to the young victim who had become a symbol of injustice.

Homily Calls for Reflection and Emulation

In a poignant homily titled ‘Forever With The Lord’, Ven. Revd Goodluck Bayagbon of the God’s Grace Ministry, Warri, urged Christians to lead lives worthy of emulation and aspire to heavenly rewards.

Reflecting on Sylvester’s life, the cleric emphasized his virtuous character, describing him as a compassionate, diligent, and devout young Christian who touched the lives of many.

Celebrating a Life Cut Short

Despite the tragedy of Sylvester’s premature passing, Ven. Revd Goodluck Bayagbon encouraged mourners to celebrate his life and emulate his example of kindness, diligence, and faithfulness.

He emphasized that Sylvester had fulfilled his purpose on earth and had now found peace in the arms of the Lord.

The homily concluded with a reminder of the ultimate goal of achieving heaven, where pain and sorrow are no more.

Calls for Justice Continue

While Sylvester’s funeral provided an opportunity for mourning and reflection, it also served as a reminder of the ongoing quest for justice.

Despite the passage of two years since his tragic death, calls for accountability and reform within Dowen College and the broader society continue unabated.
