Stats SA extends deadline for Census counting in the Western Cape

Statistics South Africa has extended the deadline for residents of the Western Cape to get counted in the Census 2022.

They deadline has been extended to 31 May 2022.

The current extension was set to lapse on Saturday as counting in the province lags behind the rest of the country.

Statistician-General, Risenga Maluleke, says residents have however responded positively to the urgent awareness calls of the Western Cape government and municipalities in the past month.

Maluleke says counted household numbers have jumped from 49%  just before the Easter weekend to 70% this week.

He warned that low participation rates may affect the overall result  – which is the basis for government budget allocations.

StatsSA is urging Western Cape residents to make use of the online questionnaire or to answer to Census field workers.

Slow uptake

Last month, Statistician-General Risenga Maluleke decried the slow uptake of registration by households.

R3.2 billion is what it will cost to carry out the Census and the results will be released in 12 months.
