Spanish referee Jose Luis Munuera Montero has found himself at the center of a heated football debate after issuing a straight red card to Jude Bellingham during Real Madrid’s clash with Osasuna.
The decision, which Munuera Montero believed was justified after allegedly hearing the English midfielder say “f*** you,” has sparked a storm of controversy.
Bellingham, on the other hand, insists he was simply expressing frustration at himself, muttering “f*** off” rather than directing it at the referee.
Regardless of intent, his protests fell on deaf ears, and now, the young star faces a possible suspension for using foul language on the pitch.
Real Madrid’s Growing Frustration
Real Madrid, already feeling aggrieved over recent refereeing decisions, has reportedly considered taking drastic action—including the possibility of leaving LaLiga.
The club believes that Bellingham’s sending-off is just another example of unfair officiating against them, further intensifying the debate around the standard of refereeing in Spain.
Munuera Montero’s Off-Field Scrutiny
As if the red card drama wasn’t enough, Munuera Montero is also under investigation by the Spanish Football Federation’s (RFEF) compliance committee for his involvement with Talentus Sports, a sports consultancy agency he owns.
The agency has been linked to UEFA, LaLiga, and several clubs—including Atletico Madrid and Manchester City.
However, Munuera Montero firmly denies ever receiving payments from any football entity, stating that he is ready to defend his reputation.
Facing Threats and Harassment
Speaking on the Spanish television show El Partidazo, Munuera Montero revealed that the backlash has gone beyond football, affecting his personal life and family.
“Today it was my turn, but how long have referees been suffering these attacks?” he questioned.
“They are vilifying my nephews, attacking my nine brothers, and even my 80-year-old father, who went to mass today… but I better keep quiet.”
His concerns go beyond his own situation—he believes football is spiraling into a culture that encourages aggression rather than respect.
“Are we controlling violence, or are we promoting it? This is getting out of hand.
What kind of sport are we creating with football?”
Protecting His Family
To shield himself and his loved ones from further harassment, Munuera Montero took drastic measures, including shutting down his LinkedIn account.
“Before they sent me another hundred thousand death threats or insults, I silenced my LinkedIn account.
Not because I’m afraid, but for the protection of my family. They are really struggling with this.”
Despite the pressure, he remains resolute.
“My parents haven’t asked me to quit because they know that’s impossible. But they don’t deserve this.”
No Regrets Over the Bellingham Decision
When asked if he had any second thoughts about the red card decision, Munuera Montero remained firm.
“I haven’t even thought about what happened on Saturday,” he stated.
“People shouldn’t believe everything they read. We have to try to help each other.”
He also addressed the bigger issue of refereeing mistakes.
“As long as Munuera Montero is on the pitch or in VAR, he will continue to make mistakes.
If people thought VAR would eliminate errors, they were wrong.
As long as we are human, mistakes will happen. Let’s be clear: we didn’t introduce VAR—the teams did.”
Defending His Business Ventures
Regarding his company, Talentus Sports, Munuera Montero explained that it was established to educate young athletes on the values of refereeing.
“I’ve been doing this for a long time, and I thought, why not create a company? For a year now, we’ve been giving talks to companies about sports values.”
He dismissed allegations of financial conflicts, explaining that Talentus Sports simply offers a free LinkedIn service to connect young people with job opportunities in various sports—not just football.
“That’s all there is to it. There’s nothing more.”
What’s Next for Munuera Montero?
Munuera Montero will not be officiating in LaLiga this weekend, but he insists it’s not due to the ongoing investigation.
“There are 20 referees and only 10 matches each weekend.
I simply stepped aside until this is cleared up.”
Meanwhile, Real Madrid and Jude Bellingham will be back in action on Wednesday night, taking on Manchester City in a crucial Champions League fixture.
With a one-goal lead from the first leg, Madrid will be looking to secure their place in the Round of 16—while Bellingham hopes to put the controversy behind him and focus on football once again.
