The suspects were armed with bush knives and allegedly held the family hostage before dragging the man outside while his wife and child were kept inside.

“The man was then allegedly hacked by the suspects until he gave up. Thereafter the suspects reportedly pulled his body into a certain rondavel before setting it alight,” said Mohlala.

The suspects fled the scene. The deceased was identified by his family as Mxolisi Ndlela. The motive for the attack is unknown at this stage. The police spokesperson said the authorities cannot rule out the possibility that the murder could be witchcraft-related.

The Piet Retief SAPS have opened cases of murder and arson and a manhunt for the five suspects is underway.

Mpumalanga provincial police commissioner Lieutenant-General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela condemned the incident.

Members of the public with information about the suspects are encouraged to contact Crime Stop on 08600-10111.
