South Africa bids for 2027 Women’s World Cup

Johannesburg — South Africa’s football organization is contemplating a proposal to host the 2027 Women’s World Cup, according to its chief executive, who made the announcement on Tuesday.

“We welcomed the world to South Africa 12 years ago when we hosted the men’s Fifa World Cup, and we would appreciate the opportunity to do it again in 2027 for the women’s event,” said Safa CEO Tebogo Motlanthe to AFP.

The decision to bid was decided at the weekend executive council meeting of the South Africa Football Association (SAFA).

South Africa hosted the 2010 men’s Fifa World Cup, making it the first and only African nation to hold this prestigious event.

Other bidders for the 2027 event, including Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany, have already filed a joint proposal.

The United States has expressed interest in bidding for the 2027 or 2031 event.

South Africa had been in contention for the 2023 match, but withdrew.

In 2010, South Africa hosted the 64 matches of the month-long tournament in 10 venues, of which five were newly constructed and five were renovated.

The stadiums are now utilized by soccer and rugby teams.

South Africa, Morocco, Zambia, and Nigeria have qualified for the 2023 World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by Australia and New Zealand.

Ten teams, including Cameroon and Senegal, have qualified for the playoffs, with three spots up for grabs.
