Manchester United star, Bruno Fernandes extends stay until 2026

Bruno Fernandes’ contract at Manchester United was extended until 2026 on Friday, in a deal that is set to make the Portuguese midfielder one of the club’s highest earners.

Since joining the Red Devils from Sporting Lisbon in January 2020, Fernandes has made 117 appearances for the club, scoring 49 goals and supplying 39 assists.

United, on the other hand, will need him to improve on his inconsistent form this season if they are to improve on their current sixth-place result in the Premier League and finish strong enough to qualify for the Champions League.

Manchester United also have an option to extend the deal by a further year to 2027.

“From the moment that I joined Manchester United, I have had a special relationship with the club and our amazing fans,” said Fernandes.

“I grew up watching this team, dreaming of getting the chance to play here one day. That dream is now a reality and an honour.”

One of new United CEO Richard Arnold’s first major acts after succeeding Ed Woodward as the club’s most senior official in January is to extend a new contract to Fernandes.

Fernandes’ old contract had more than three years left on it, but he was reportedly awarded a pay raise to reflect his newfound status at the club.

Despite the 27-year-best old’s efforts, United has gone five years without winning a trophy.

Best it yet to come at Old Trafford – Bruno Fernandes

But Fernandes believes “the best is yet to come” from his time at Old Trafford.

“There is so much more that I want to achieve here, and I know that is the same for the rest of the squad and staff,” he added.

“More than anything, we want to give the fans the success that they deserve.

“We have shared some great moments over the last years, but the best is yet to come from myself and this team.”

Arnold’s focus has now shifted to finding a new manager for United, with Ajax manager Erik ten Hag and PSG manager Mauricio Pochettino the front contenders.

Regardless of whatever the new manager is, John Murtough, the club’s football director, is convinced that Fernandes will play a key role.

“Everyone is well aware of Bruno’s importance to Manchester United,” said Murtough.

“His goals and assists record is phenomenal and he has performed remarkably consistently since he joined the club.”
