Authorities in southern Florida are investigating a tragic death after a 31-year-old American Airlines flight attendant was found washed ashore near Hollywood Beach, north of Miami, with early findings suggesting she may have been struck by a boat while snorkeling.
Kellie Melinda Williams was discovered around 8 p.m. last Wednesday by fishermen along the shoreline of Hollywood Beach.
Her body was later identified by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, which said preliminary evidence pointed to injuries consistent with a vessel impact, according to reports from CBS News.
Investigation Links Death to Possible Boating Collision During Snorkeling Trip
Law enforcement officials believe Williams may have been in the water snorkeling or diving earlier on the same day her body was recovered.
Detectives from Hollywood Police Department and investigators from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission are jointly examining the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Authorities indicated that the area of focus includes waters near Dr. Von D. Mizell–Eula Johnson State Park, where she is believed to have been active in the water prior to her death.
Police have not yet confirmed details about any vessel potentially involved, and it remains unclear whether the operator of a boat was aware of a collision or if any suspects have been identified.
Fishermen’s Discovery Sparks Shocking Scene on Hollywood Beach
Witness accounts described a distressing scene as fishermen pulled Williams’ body from the water and onto the shoreline.
One local resident, Emilio Benitez, told NBC Miami that he observed the recovery from a nearby window.
“I saw them from my window pulling something, then I saw them drag something onto the shoreline,” he said. “And it turned out to be a lady’s body.”
The discovery quickly drew attention from authorities and bystanders along the beach as emergency responders arrived at the scene.
Loved Ones Remember Experienced Snorkeler and Newly Married Woman
Family members described Williams as both experienced in water activities and deeply passionate about marine life.
Her parents, speaking through local media coverage, were reported to be devastated by the loss and remembered her as a “great person” and skilled snorkeler.
Originally from California, Williams had recently relocated to Florida.
Social media posts show she was married in October 2025, less than a year before her death.
Her Instagram account frequently featured snorkeling adventures, underwater photography, and encounters with marine wildlife, reflecting a long-standing enthusiasm for ocean exploration.
Airline and Union Express Grief Over Sudden Loss
Her employer, American Airlines, issued a statement expressing sorrow over the incident.
“We are deeply saddened by the loss of our colleague. Our thoughts and support are with her family, loved ones and colleagues at this time,” the airline said.
The Association of Professional Flight Attendants also shared condolences, describing Williams as a valued member of the Miami-based flight attendant community and extending support to her family and friends.
Authorities Appeal for Information as Probe Continues
Investigators continue to urge anyone who may have witnessed Williams in the water or observed a possible boating incident in the area to come forward.
Members of the public are encouraged to contact the Hollywood Police Department or the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission as the investigation remains ongoing, with officials still working to determine the exact sequence of events that led to her death.
