On Tuesday, 19 April, a gang of seven men appeared in Randburg Magistrate’s Court on allegations of murder, attempted murder, kidnapping, and four counts of assault GBH, robbery with aggravating circumstances, and extortion.
The accusations issued against the seven suspects are connected to the killing of Elvis Nyathi, the Zimbabwean man who was savagely assaulted and burned to death in Diepsloot, according to National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokeswoman Phindi Mjonondwane.
The offenders are also accused of assaulting and accusing other Zimbabweans of committing crimes in the Gauteng township.
“The group is alleged to have robbed some of the victims of their belongings and demanded money in exchange for the release of those that they captured,” said Mjonodwane.
Initially, 14 people were arrested for their alleged involvement in Nyathi’s murder but only seven were charged as there was insufficient evidence for seven of the arrested individuals.
The matter was postponed until 22 April to give the accused an opportunity to appoint legal representation.
