Recently, a notable incident occurred as two Russian and two Chinese bombers were intercepted while flying near American airspace.
American and Canadian fighter jets were quickly deployed to intercept these aircraft hours before President Joe Biden addressed the nation.
The North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) detected and tracked the Russian TU-95 ‘Bear’ turboprop strategic bombers and Chinese H-6 jet bombers as they entered the Alaska Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ) on Wednesday.
Although none of the bombers crossed into American airspace, NORAD was vigilant in monitoring their movements.
Monitoring and Security
The Alaska ADIZ, which extends 150 miles from the U.S. coastline, is closely watched by NORAD’s satellites, radar systems, and aircraft.
While the presence of these foreign planes is not deemed a direct threat, NORAD maintains strict oversight to ensure national security. All aircraft entering this zone are required to identify themselves to avoid any security breaches.
Rising Tensions
This event comes amid rising tensions between the U.S. and Russia, particularly in light of ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East.
Defense experts have noted that global tensions are at their highest since at least the 1970s.
Biden’s Farewell Address
On Wednesday night, President Biden delivered an 11-minute farewell address, explaining his decision to withdraw from his reelection campaign.
He stated that he wanted to ‘pass the torch’ to Vice President Kamala Harris, believing that her leadership would help ‘unite’ the country and ‘save democracy.’
