On February 1, 2025, a missile strike targeted a boarding school in the city of Sudzha, located in the Kursk region of Russia.
This attack, which led to civilian casualties, has resulted in Russia launching an investigation into the perpetrators.
The Russian Investigative Committee has identified the individual believed to be behind the strike and made it clear that they will hold those responsible accountable.
Investigative Findings and Allegations
Russian authorities have pinpointed Rostyslav Karpusha, the commander of the 19th Separate Missile Brigade of Ukraine’s Armed Forces, as the individual who gave the order for the bombing.
As a result, Karpusha has been added to Russia’s list of terrorists and extremists.
A criminal case has been filed against him under Article 205 of the Russian Criminal Code, which pertains to terrorist acts resulting in death, with life imprisonment as the maximum penalty.
Investigators are actively working to track down Karpusha and his collaborators.
Ukraine’s Response and Russia’s Denial
While Russia has accused Karpusha and Ukraine’s armed forces (AFU) of orchestrating the strike, Ukraine has responded by blaming Russia for the bombing.
However, Russia’s Special Envoy on Crimes of the Kyiv Regime, Rodion Miroshnik, has dismissed these claims as an “information provocation.”
He noted that Moscow had previously informed both the Russian and International Red Cross organizations that civilians were housed at the boarding school, making the attack even more egregious.
The Attack and Its Timing
On February 1, Russian officials reported that Ukrainian forces used an American-made HIMARS multiple-launch rocket system to target the school, launching missiles from the Sumy region.
According to Russia’s Ministry of Defense, the bombing was part of an effort to shift global attention away from alleged war crimes committed by Ukrainian forces in the village of Russkoye Porechnoe in the Kursk region.
Russian Officials Promise Accountability
Russian politicians, including Grigory Karasin, Chairman of the Federation Council’s Committee on International Affairs, have condemned the attack.
Karasin described the bombing as a product of Kyiv’s “inhuman and bloody policies,” and vowed that those responsible would be held to account.
He emphasized that the investigation into this act of violence would continue until the perpetrators were brought to justice.
In the eyes of Russian officials, the bombing of a civilian facility like the boarding school is an example of what they claim is an ongoing disregard for human life by the Kyiv government.
As tensions continue to rise, both countries continue to point fingers, with Russia adamant about bringing those responsible for the bombing to justice.
