Laura Brand has stood beside her husband, comedian Russell Brand, as he appeared at Southwark Crown Court in London for the opening stage of his trial on multiple sexual offence charges.
The couple were seen holding hands as Brand arrived at and left the court during the jury-swearing process. His wife’s presence offered a public display of support as proceedings began in a case involving allegations of rape, sexual assault and indecent assault.
Brand, 51, denies the allegations against him. The charges relate to alleged incidents spanning several years, between 1999 and 2009.
Laura, 38, is expected to attend further hearings during a trial estimated to last around ten weeks. The proceedings place the couple’s private life under renewed public scrutiny as the court considers the allegations.
Wife’s Loyalty Comes Under Public Scrutiny
Laura’s decision to accompany her husband has attracted attention because she has generally maintained a low public profile.
A long-term associate quoted in reports described her support as a natural decision, saying she had never doubted Brand’s innocence. The associate also noted that the allegations pre-date the couple’s marriage, although they briefly dated in 2007 before rekindling their relationship years later.
According to people familiar with the couple, Laura has remained committed to Brand as he prepares to defend himself in court.
She was reportedly dressed in a brown trouser suit, white trainers and sunglasses when she arrived at court. After the proceedings, she was seen returning to a chauffeur-driven vehicle.
The couple are understood to be spending time in the Home Counties during the trial, with Laura also caring for their three children.
How Laura and Russell Brand Reconnected
Laura, the daughter of former professional golfer Bernard Gallacher and his wife Lesley, grew up in Surrey alongside her sister Kirsty and brother Jamie.
She studied art at university before working in the hospitality industry, including involvement in the opening of Electric Diner in London’s Notting Hill area.
Her relationship with Brand began in 2007, when she was a 19-year-old art student and he was already an established comedian and broadcaster. Their early romance was brief, and they went their separate ways.
The pair reconnected in 2015 after a chance meeting near the Grand Union Canal in east London. Both were reportedly recovering from difficult break-ups at the time.
In an interview with Grazia several years later, Laura recalled being heartbroken following the end of a previous relationship when she unexpectedly encountered Brand.
She said the meeting felt significant and that both quickly recognised the potential for a serious relationship.
Brand had previously been married to American pop star Katy Perry. The couple separated in 2011 after approximately two years together.
Marriage, Children and a Life Away From Celebrity Culture
Following their reunion, Laura and Brand moved in together and began building a family. Their daughter Mabel was born in 2016, and they married in 2017 at Remenham Church near Henley-on-Thames.
Their second daughter, Peggy, was born in 2018, followed by their son, Herb, in 2023.
Laura subsequently left the hospitality industry and developed a career as an author. Her publications include The Joy Journal for Magical Everyday Play, released in 2020, followed by The Joy Journal for Grown-Ups and Slow Down and Be Here Now.
The couple also embraced a quieter lifestyle in rural Oxfordshire, spending time with their children and animals, including dogs, chickens and cats.
They bought a narrowboat for weekend trips and later explored wellness events together. In 2023, they hosted Community with Laura + Russell Brand, a three-day festival in Hay-on-Wye featuring vegan food, holistic activities, workshops, canoeing and comedy.
Friends described the lifestyle as a departure from Brand’s earlier years in the celebrity spotlight, suggesting he had become increasingly interested in family life and wellness.
Sexual Misconduct Allegations Led to Police Investigation
The current trial follows allegations that became public in 2023 after an investigation by The Times and Channel 4’s Dispatches.
Five women publicly accused Brand of sexual assault and sexual or emotional abuse. Brand denied the allegations, saying that although he had been highly promiscuous, his relationships had been consensual.
The allegations prompted an investigation by the Metropolitan Police.
In April 2025, Brand was charged in connection with alleged offences involving four women between 1999 and 2005. The initial charges included two counts of rape, one count of indecent assault and two counts of sexual assault.
Further charges were announced in December 2025, involving an additional alleged rape and sexual assault said to have taken place in London in 2009.
The proceedings now require the court to examine the evidence and determine the allegations. Brand’s denial of the accusations remains central to his position in the case.
Move to Florida Marked a New Chapter for the Family
In April 2025, Brand announced that he and his family had moved to the United States. The move followed a period of growing public attention surrounding the allegations.
The couple are reported to be living in a waterfront property in Florida’s Santa Rosa Beach area, along the Emerald Coast.
Before relocating, Brand was baptised in the River Thames by adventurer Bear Grylls. An associate of the couple suggested that the family had been seeking a fresh start amid the controversy.
Laura has withdrawn from much of the public spotlight. She deleted her Instagram account in 2023 following the allegations and has not recently released new books, according to the report.
Her move to the United States also meant leaving behind close family members in Britain.
Family Support Could Be Important During the Trial
Laura’s family relationships are likely to remain an important source of support while the court proceedings continue.
Her father, Bernard Gallacher, has previously been described by a showbusiness source as fond of Brand, although his views on the current allegations have not been publicly established in the account.
Laura’s sister Kirsty, a television and sports presenter, also publicly expressed support for Brand in 2023 by sharing a video in which he denied the allegations. She later removed the post after facing criticism.
Those familiar with the family have suggested that the sisters’ close relationship could help Laura manage the pressure of the coming weeks.
As the trial progresses, Laura’s visible support for her husband contrasts with the serious allegations being examined in court. The case remains unresolved, and the allegations must be determined through the judicial process.
