Christian Eriksen’s career continues to be affected by the aftermath of his cardiac arrest during the Euro 2020 tournament in 2021.
The Danish midfielder collapsed on the pitch near the end of the first half during a match against Finland, suffering a cardiac arrest.
Though Eriksen made an incredible recovery and returned to play at the top level with both Brentford and Manchester United, there are still concerns about how his health affects his ability to continue playing at the highest level.
Ruben Amorim Shares His Concerns
Ruben Amorim, speaking after Manchester United’s recent loss to Tottenham, has voiced concern about Eriksen’s health, highlighting the need for caution when managing the 33-year-old’s condition.
Eriksen missed the trip to Tottenham due to illness, and Amorim, who is closely involved with United’s staff, addressed the importance of keeping a close eye on his heart health.
“Of course, Chris has the heart situation, and we have to be really careful with that,” said Amorim.
He added that it wasn’t the heart itself causing the issue, but rather the need to control Eriksen’s heart rate, especially since he had been dealing with a fever.
These ongoing health concerns make managing Eriksen’s game time and fitness crucial.
Eriksen’s Current Season at United
This season, Eriksen has made 13 appearances for United in the league, starting seven of those matches.
Despite his experience and skill, his contributions have been limited, with just one assist to his name so far.
After his cardiac arrest, Eriksen became the first player in top-flight football to be fitted with an implantable cardioverter defibrillator, a device that helps reset the heart in case of an emergency.
His health is a constant concern, and the club is careful about how much he is pushed in each match.
Health Concerns Across the Squad
Eriksen isn’t the only Manchester United player who has faced health issues this season.
Full-back Noussair Mazraoui also had his own scare when he experienced heart palpitations.
He underwent a minor heart procedure that was described as a success, though club sources made it clear that it wasn’t an emergency.
Additionally, several other United players, including Lisandro Martinez, Luke Shaw, and Mason Mount, have been sidelined with injuries, leaving the team short-handed for recent matches.
In light of these absences, Amorim called up a number of teenagers from the United academy to bolster the squad for their trip to North London.
Young Talent Steps Up
The call-ups included seven promising young players: Sekou Kone, Jack Moorhouse, Elyh Harrison, Harry Amass, Chido Obi, Jack Fletcher, and Tyler Fredricson.
While only Chido Obi made it onto the bench for the match against Tottenham, he caught the media’s attention with his impressive performances in youth football.
Obi, a former Arsenal youth player, had an outstanding record, including scoring a remarkable 10 goals in a 14-3 victory over Liverpool with the U16s and later netting seven goals in a 9-0 win against Norwich with the U18s.
United secured Obi’s signature in September, and he has already proven himself with the club’s U18 team, scoring a hat-trick on his debut for them.
His potential has already made an impression, and many are eager to see how he develops as he continues to rise through the ranks.
