The highly anticipated Betway Premiership match between Royal AM and Orlando Pirates, scheduled for Thursday, has been called off.
The Premier Soccer League (PSL) announced on Wednesday that the match would not go ahead due to ongoing issues with Royal AM’s current curatorship.
Suspension of Royal AM’s Fixtures
The PSL revealed that all upcoming fixtures for Royal AM, including this one, have been suspended indefinitely.
The decision came after the league determined that the KZN-based club could not guarantee that they would be able to honor their fixtures under the curatorship.
This suspension applies to both their Betway Premiership and Nedbank Cup matches, leaving their schedule in limbo until further notice.
No Points Awarded for Cancelled Match
While many might have expected Orlando Pirates to automatically be awarded three points for Royal AM’s failure to show up, the PSL clarified that the match would remain postponed.
If Royal AM had failed to honor the fixture, Pirates would have been given the points, but the situation remains unresolved for now.
Royal AM’s Communication with PSL
This situation comes after Royal AM informed the league on January 9 that they couldn’t fulfill their match commitments, specifically their game against Chippa United on January 11, due to complications arising from the appointment of a Curator.
Since then, the PSL’s Executive Committee has held multiple meetings to assess whether the club could meet its obligations under the curatorship.
Despite being promised a joint letter of comfort from both the club’s management and the Curator to resolve the situation, no such letter has been received, leading to the indefinite suspension of the match against Orlando Pirates and all other Royal AM fixtures.
Royal AM to Make Further Representations
The PSL will give Royal AM the opportunity to make additional representations regarding the matter on Friday, January 24, at 11 AM.
The league is still hopeful that the issues surrounding the club’s curatorship can be resolved, allowing the suspended matches to resume in the future.
