Roosevelt High School principal Cristèl Venter has received widespread praise on social media after taking decisive action following a chaotic Matric Dance in Johannesburg.

Venter issued a strongly worded open letter addressing what she described as deeply troubling behaviour at the school event, including allegations of alcohol and drug use, reckless driving and threats involving firearms.

Her decision to intervene and bring the evening to an early end has been applauded by parents and other social media users, many of whom said the incident highlighted the need for greater parental responsibility.

Matric Dance Descends Into Chaos

The school’s Matric Dance was reportedly disrupted by a series of serious incidents involving some learners.

According to the principal’s account, some pupils arrived at the venue allegedly under the influence of alcohol and drugs. Their behaviour reportedly escalated during the procession, with staff allegedly being threatened with firearms.

There were also reports of reckless driving at the venue, adding another layer of concern to an evening intended to celebrate the school’s matric learners.

Intoxicated Learners Reportedly Became Violently Ill

The problems continued inside the venue, where some learners were reportedly heavily intoxicated.

Some allegedly became violently ill and vomited at the event, further contributing to the disruption and prompting serious concerns about the conduct and safety of those attending.

Venter had initially been unable to attend the Matric Dance because she was unwell. However, she was eventually called to the event after the situation deteriorated.

Principal Decides to End the Event

Faced with the escalating problems, Venter made the decision to cut the Matric Dance short.

Her intervention was later explained in an open letter in which she addressed the behaviour and called for greater accountability from both learners and their parents.

The principal’s firm stance quickly attracted attention online, with many users supporting her decision to prioritise safety and discipline over allowing the event to continue.

Parents Urged to Take Greater Responsibility

Much of the online reaction focused on the role parents play in shaping children’s behaviour.

One social media user, Nelisiwe Kame MaGasa Yengwa, praised Venter for taking responsibility and argued that parents must play a greater role in teaching children respect, kindness, responsibility and strong moral values.

She also said parents had an important responsibility to lead by example.

Calls for Stronger Support for Schools

Sarah Coutts also praised the principal, describing her response as an example of the type of leadership and discipline needed in schools.

She called on the Department of Basic Education to support principals and schools that take a firm approach when dealing with serious misconduct.

Her comments reflected a broader concern that school leaders can struggle to enforce discipline when faced with increasingly serious behavioural problems.

Social Media Users Back the Decision

Bridget Abrahamse-Ford said the incident represented an issue that many people were reluctant to discuss openly.

She praised Venter and her staff for attempting to salvage what remained of the evening before ultimately supporting the decision to end it.

She also echoed the call for parents to take responsibility for their children’s conduct, arguing that parents must “parent” so teachers can focus on teaching.

Parents Warned That Children Are Watching

Another commenter, Cedric Kok, specifically backed Venter’s decision to terminate the event early.

Kok argued that parents who disagreed with the principal’s actions should nevertheless consider the wider responsibility surrounding their children’s behaviour.

He agreed with Venter’s argument that children’s conduct is influenced by what happens at home and called for parents to do more.

Incident Sparks Wider Debate About Discipline

The response to the Roosevelt High School incident has opened a broader conversation about discipline, parental responsibility and the challenges faced by schools when serious misconduct occurs at student events.

While the Matric Dance was intended to be a milestone celebration for learners, the reported behaviour turned the event into a serious disciplinary and safety issue.

For many social media users, Venter’s decision to intervene demonstrated that school leadership was prepared to put student and staff safety ahead of allowing the celebration to continue at any cost.
