Officers have observed a rise in cases involving “excessive violence” across the capital, leading to concerns about the severity and intensity of these attacks.
Ferocious Murders on the Rise:
During a briefing in south London, Detective Cochlin pointed out the emerging trend of exceptionally violent attacks that appear to exceed what might be expected or necessary.
The excessive violence displayed in these cases has been a matter of surprise and concern for law enforcement.
While not explicitly stating it as a distinct trend in 2023, he emphasized that this observation has been building up over time.

Statistics and Trends:
The briefing in Lambeth also presented the latest crime statistics covering the period from January 1 to July 31, 2023, showcasing a detection rate of 92 per cent.
So far, there have been 65 homicides in London this year, with six involving guns and 49 connected to knife violence.
Among the victims, 80 per cent were male, with 46 per cent being white, 38 per cent black, 15 per cent Asian, and 3 per cent either Arabic or North African.
Victim Demographics and High-Risk Groups:

Positive Outcomes and Ongoing Efforts:
Despite the challenging situation, conviction rates remained commendably high, and Detective Cochlin praised the Metropolitan Police’s 24/7 response.
Efforts have been made to strike a balance between solving crimes and preventing future incidents by targeting the removal of firearms from the streets while learning from past experiences across the entire Metropolitan Police force.
The Role of Family Liaison Officers:
Recognizing the profound impact that murders have on individuals and communities, Detective Cochlin highlighted the crucial role played by family liaison officers. These officers are instrumental in helping to rebuild trust within affected communities, providing support from the initial involvement in a case through to the court proceedings.
Conclusion:
With murders in London showing an alarming trend of increasing ferocity, law enforcement agencies remain committed to combating crime and ensuring justice for victims and their families.
The tireless efforts of homicide teams and the crucial support provided by family liaison officers continue to be vital components in addressing and preventing such heinous acts within the city.
