A large sinkhole left inhabitants of a wealthy metropolitan suburb without water and swallowed a luxury automobile.

Around 10 p.m. on Sunday, the sinkhole appeared on Centro Avenue in the Subiaco neighborhood of central Perth.

A water main burst due to the hole, flooding the busy street and cutting off water to 60 homes and businesses for the night.

Observers watched in terror as a Mercedes-Benz that was parked just above the sinkhole was slowly flooded.

As the water crawls over the roof, the video shows the car’s windscreen wipers battling it.

The area was blocked off by police as the floodwaters rose.

A Water corporation representative told Perth Now that “our teams have been working all night to fix the damaged main and works will continue throughout the day to ensure the road is safe to reopen.”

We anticipate the water supply to be back online by late morning. For those who require it, our workers have bottled water on hand.

The region is under traffic management, there are road diversions in place, and drivers are urged to use caution.

Photos from Monday morning show the muddy street being inspected by emergency services.

Once water and power were restored, The Water Corporation was prepared to start work on repairing the road and sidewalk. The area was anticipated to be fully available to traffic by Monday afternoon.

On the opposite side of Centro Avenue, the pathway is still accessible.
