A retired U.S. Army major general has issued a stark warning that the situation in the Middle East is approaching one of its most dangerous points in recent months, arguing that the risk of a wider military conflict has risen sharply.
Speaking during a recent interview, Maj. Gen. Randy Manner said the current security environment is more volatile than anything he has observed in the region over the past several months.
He suggested that recent American military deployments indicate preparations for a potentially significant escalation.
US Military Movements Seen as a Key Warning Sign
Manner pointed to the scale of U.S. logistical deployments as one of the strongest indicators that military planners are preparing for more intense operations.
According to the retired commander, the United States has committed roughly one-quarter to one-third of its aerial refueling capability to the Middle East, a level of concentration he believes reflects growing concern inside the Pentagon.
He argued that such a large commitment of strategic assets is rarely made without expectations that military activity could intensify.
Ground Operation in Strait of Hormuz Dismissed as Dangerous
Among the scenarios discussed was the possibility of a ground operation aimed at securing the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world‘s most strategically important shipping routes.
Manner firmly rejected that option, describing such an operation as something he would never support under any circumstances.
He warned that deploying ground forces in an effort to control the narrow waterway would carry enormous military and political risks, calling the idea “absolute insanity.”
Iran’s Military Capability Should Not Be Underestimated
The retired general also cautioned against dismissing Iran’s military capabilities.
He argued that Tehran’s actions should not automatically be viewed as irrational, saying its leadership has demonstrated restraint despite possessing the ability to inflict significant damage on American military assets.
According to Manner, Iran has the capability to sink a U.S. warship but has deliberately chosen not to do so, suggesting its decisions have been driven by strategic calculations rather than impulsive behavior.
Concern Grows Over Possible Escalation
Looking ahead, Manner said he has become increasingly convinced that the situation could deteriorate rapidly.
He explained that his assessment of the likelihood of a major escalation has risen to what he described as a “very, very high” probability, warning that developments during the coming week could significantly worsen the conflict.
While he did not predict a specific event, he suggested that the combination of military deployments, regional tensions, and ongoing hostilities creates conditions where further escalation appears increasingly likely.
